Afghanistan’s crumbling health care system will see an injection of US$45 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, according to the world body’s humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths. Announcing the release of funds on September 22, 2021, Griffiths said the move is meant to keep hospitals and other health institutions operating through the end of the year. On a visit to the Afghan capital Kabul, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for immediate action to save the country from “an imminent humanitarian catastrophe”. Since the Taliban seized control of the country in August, international donors, including the World Bank, have frozen funding, citing concerns about how the militant group’s takeover may affect Afghanistan's prospects for development. Disruptions of border crossings and bank operations have also contributed to a shortage of medicine in the country.
