Coronavirus: Cuomo says Trump should mandate people wear masks in public, and "lead by example"

CA, 30 Jun 2020
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump should issue an executive order mandating that people wear masks in public during the coronavirus pandemic, and that he should "lead by example" by wearing one himself.

"The other states are just starting to do it now, states that were recalcitrant, governors who said 'we don't need to do this, masks don't work," Cuomo said at a media briefing. "Now they're doing a 180...let the president have the same sense and do that as an executive order."

During the media briefing, Cuomo also expressed his frustration with the federal government and its response to the spike in cases across the U.S., saying that the White House is "in denial."

During a White House briefing later, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Trump believes it a "personal choice" for individuals to wear a mask amid the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that “he has no problem with masks and to do whatever your local jurisdiction requests."

New cases of COVID-19 continue to surge across the U.S., with over 30 states seeing an increase in new cases.
