Australia’s last two accredited correspondents in mainland China have been rushed out of the country as diplomatic relations between the trading partners worsen. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Bill Birtles and Michael Smith from the Australian Financial Review landed in Sydney on September 8, 2020. They were reportedly questioned by Chinese authorities about Cheng Lei, a detained Australian citizen who had been working as a high-profile TV presenter at China’s government-run English-language news channel CGTN.
