CA, 26 Jul 2020
A memorial was held in Selma, Ala., on Saturday to honour civil rights icon and former United States congressman John Lewis.

Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80, after a battling Stage IV pancreatic cancer.

The longtime Georgia congressman was among the civil rights demonstrators who were beaten by state troopers in 1965 after crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in what has since become known as "Bloody Sunday." On Sunday, July 26, his flag-draped casket will be carried across the bridge one last time.

The event in Selma at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church is part of a six-day celebration of life honouring Lewis, culminating in funeral services which will be held in Georgia.
