House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remembered her colleague, longtime Georgia congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, during a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol on Monday.

Pelosi acknowledged protesters calling for racial justice in cities across the United States as she spoke about Lewis and talked about "the great joy" that he felt sharing a "message of action" with young Americans, before deferring to Lewis' own words.

Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80 after a battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.

A six-day celebration of life honouring Lewis is planned, culminating in funeral services which will be held in Georgia.
