Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell paid respects to civil rights icon and longtime Georgia congressman John Lewis during a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol on Monday.

McConnell said Lewis '"lived and worked with urgency" to build a community "at peace with itself" and said, quoting Martin Luther King Jr., that Lewis had "paid the price" to "help bend" the arch of the moral universe toward justice.

Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80 after a battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.

A public viewing is to be held for the civil rights icon outdoors on the steps of the Capitol.
