Canadian Finance Minister Morneau apologizes for role in WE charity controversy

CA, 18 Jul 2020
Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau apologized on Friday for his role in the WE charity controversy, which has cast a spotlight on the Trudeau administration in recent weeks, and is now the subject of an ethics probe, stating that he regrets not recusing himself from the discussions over whether to approve the $912-million program.

Morneau said that while the public service recommended WE charity as the best organization to administer the Canada student service grant, the finance department and other departments were working together to determine the best way to administer the program.

The minister said he could not say whether his office had had direct discussions with the WE charity prior to publicly announcing the contract.
“It would have made it much better for our deliberations had I recused myself,” Morneau said, adding that the perception of a conflict of interest over the handling of the We charity deal was legitimate.
