U.S. AG Barr accuses Hollywood, Big Tech of collaborating with China

CA, 17 Jul 2020
U.S. Attorney General William Barr took aim at Hollywood companies on Thursday, including the Walt Disney Company, as well as large technology firms like Apple, Google and Microsoft, accusing them of collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party.

"Corporations such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Apple have shown themselves all too willing to collaborate with the (Chinese Communist party)," Barr said in a speech at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Ann Arbor, Mi. He added that Hollywood has routinely caved into pressure and censored their films "to appease the Chinese Communist Party."

“I suspect Walt Disney would be disheartened to see how the company he founded deals with the foreign dictatorships of our day,” he said.

Barr noted however, that after China imposed a new national security law in Hong Kong, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all announced they would temporarily suspend compliance with the Chinese government's requests for data.

U.S. relations with China have become increasingly strained under the Trump administration over issues like the novel coronavirus pandemic, and what the president has determined to be a lopsided trade relationship that favours China.
