MPs debate launching investigation into PM's WE Charity involvement, agree to respect family privacy

CA, 18 Jul 2020
On Friday, Members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics debated the Conservatives’ order to obtain copies of all records of the speaking appearances involving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family members including his wife, mother and brother, as well as speaking fees and expenses for all appearances since October 2008.

The Conservatives are asking for these copies to be provided to the Clerk of Committee within a week of the adoption of the order.

NDP member of the Committee Charlie Angus stressed the Committee’s power to investigate ethical breaches of public office holders, however he also stressed on the importance of handling the issue in “a respectful manner and not dragging other people in” since it involves the prime minister’s family members.

Angus gave credit to Madame Sophie Grégoire Trudeau’s “impressive” and inspiring work, and said he has “no interest in any way in bringing her into this story.”

Angus also said he’s more interested in bringing the prime minister before the committee to respond to MPs' questions on his conflict of interest in this matter.

NDP member Mathew Green debated as fellow NDP member Angus that the committee has the power to obtain that information, stating that the Conflict of Interest Act includes family members and relatives of public office holders seven times in different rules and articles of the Act.

He stressed that he has “no interest in bringing any of those people before the committee.”

Conservative member and ethics critic Michael Barret said that the Conservatives are bringing this order forward since there are few distinctions on Trudeau’s family involvement with WE Charity that are a matter of public record and need to be considered.

He added that, the opposite of what some members are interpreting, the order is aiming at bringing Trudeau’s family members to testify before the committee and how that would be inappropriate, saying “that’s absolutely not the case.”

“The only member of Trudeau’s family I want to see before the committee is Justin.” He added.

The Committee was adjourned following the Liberal members’ request after a vote and agreed to reconvene next week to further debate the Conservatives motion.
