China's sports authorities will hold a meeting on Sunday night about the safety management of sport events. It comes as extreme weather killed 21 runners at an ultra-marathon race in Gansu Province in the northwest of China. Authorities in the city of Baiyin, near where the event took place, say hailstones, freezing rain and gale force winds caused multiple cases of hypothermia. And temperatures dropped further after nightfall, complicating rescue efforts. There were 172 runners taking part in the 100-kilometer race through rugged mountainous terrain.
