Five stories to know for May 7

Reuters, 07 May 2021
Five stories to know for May 7: Texas voting bill, Idaho school shooting, Twitter's Trump ban, vaccine patents and Kamala Harris's border visit.
1. The Texas House has backed a voting bill that would bar election officials from sending voters unsolicited mail-in voting applications while giving party-affiliated poll watchers more access to voting sites. Supporters of the bill say it will help prevent voter fraud, while critics point out that it could lead to voter suppression in minority communities.
2. There was a school shooting in Idaho when a sixth-grade girl opened fire with a handgun, hitting two students and a member of the school staff.
3. Twitter has suspended several accounts that were attempting to evade the Trump ban by sharing statements from former president Donald Trump's new website.
4. Drugmakers are pushing back on sharing COVID-19 vaccine patents, claiming it could disrupt a fragile supply chain. President Biden this week came out in support of a WTO proposal to waive intellectual property protections for coronavirus vaccines, which would allow countries with less vaccine access to manufacture their own shots.
5. Vice President Kamala Harris will likely visit Mexico on June 8 to discuss the border situation, according to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
