'I was bleak with her': Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's husband reacts to new prison sentence in Iran
Telegraph, 27 Apr 2021
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe will appeal her new one-year jail sentence in Iran, her husband has said.
Iran’s decision to impose the new term was condemned by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who said she should not be returned to prison.
"The next immediate step for her is to put in an appeal,” said Richard Ratcliffe.
“Her lawyer is keen to put an application as soon as possible and was trying to reassure that listen, this is politics, there are all these negotiations going on, that's why they are doing it but actually, let's put the appeal and they can acquit on appeal.
“I have to say I've never seen any joy on appeal. We've been convicted with the maximum sentence every time so I am not holding my breath but it does make sense to do it."
An Iranian court announced the latest sentence against Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe on Monday, just weeks after she finished a prior five-year sentence, a decision Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called "inhumane".
