During Monday's provincial COVID-19 update, associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe reported 447 new COVID-19 cases in Ontario, bringing the provincial total to 540,130. The death toll in the province rose to 8,961, as four more deaths were recorded.
According to Monday’s report, 110 cases were recorded in Toronto, 61 in Peel Region, 56 in Waterloo and 39 in Porcupine Health Unit. All other local public health units reported fewer than 30 new cases in the provincial report.
"We did seem to have done quite well, I would say, over the Victoria Day weekend and the period after that. We didn't get a big upsurge of cases, so well done" chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams said.
Williams also commented on the potential return of professional sports and entertainment venues, stating that the province’s reopening framework and COVID-19 vaccination rates will play a part. Williams added that they are in “constant consultation” with Ontario’s minister of heritage, sport, tourism and culture industries.
