Chief Bellegarde updates on effort to secure apology from Pope for residential schools | FULL

CA, 01 Jul 2021
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde shared developments Wednesday in ongoing efforts to secure an apology on Canadian soil by Pope Francis for the role of the Catholic Church in the harms caused in the residential school system.

The update comes after Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan announced it had located an estimated 751 unmarked graves at the site of the former Marieval Residential School, a few weeks after what are believed to be 215 bodies of Indigenous children were found in British Columbia.

Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller said on Tuesday that any act of healing requires an apology, “a full recognition of harm done,” which hasn’t been delivered by the Catholic Church.

“People expect to see Pope Francis deliver that in a full, complete and comprehensive manner,” said Miller.

Indigenous leaders will also visit the Vatican later this year to press for a papal apology.
