As Shanghai tackles a surge in Covid-19 infections that started around March 1, 2022, temporary hospitals in the Chinese city are using robots to help ease pressure on healthcare workers. The Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre and Shanghai New International Expo Centre in the city’s Pudong district have been converted into fangcang, or “square cabin” makeshift hospitals like those first used in Wuhan two years ago. As the two centres, which can accommodate about 20,000 patients, handle a growing number of cases, more than 20 robots have been deployed to help with tasks ranging from delivering food to handling patient inquiries.
