An airship developed in China set a world record for the highest atmospheric science observation at an altitude of 9,032 metres (29,633 ft.) on May 15, 2022. Weighing 2.625 tonnes, the balloon on the airship named Jimu No 1 has a volume of 9,060 cubic metres (319,950 cu ft.) and the vehicle attached beneath it weighs 90 tonnes. The observations are being coordinated by the Aerospace Information Research Institute and Institute of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Their work is being used to study how a range of factors such as water cycles, ecology and human activities on the plateau are being affected by climate change.
