The World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday.

WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday at a meeting of the WHO's emergency committee that the impacts of the novel coronavirus pandemic will "be felt for decades to come."

The novel coronavirus has killed more than 670,000 people since emerging in Wuhan, China, with more than 17 million cases diagnosed.

The United States, Brazil, Mexico and Britain have been particularly hard hit in recent weeks as their governments have struggled to launch an effective response to the virus,.
