Lebanon protests: Demonstrators ram open parliament gates, clash with police

CA, 02 Sep 2020
Anti-government protesters on Tuesday used a makeshift battering ram to smash open gates leading to Lebanon's parliament in Beirut and clashed with police, who fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Protesters had gathered at Martyrs Square to vent anger at the mismanagement and state corruption that plunged the country into a economic crisis, as well as frustration over the handling of the investigation into the explosion that happened in Beirut on Aug. 4, which killed more than 190 people and injuring thousands.

The protests took place the same day as the country's 100th anniversary and coincided with a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.
