The German military is working on a program that will hopefully train service dogs to identify the coronavirus in people’s saliva.

German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer praised the initiative on Thursday, but said there are still many months of work ahead before they are “able to offer up clear results.”

Officials said that while the dogs can’t sniff out the actual virus, they are able to identify bio-chemical changes in body fluids caused by the virus.

The dogs are given treats if they are able to identify saliva affected by the virus.

The military is working with dedicated dog trainers at the Hanover University of Veterinary Medicine.
