WE scandal: Singh, Blanchet disagree over request to waive cabinet confidentiality

CA, 21 Jul 2020
Bloc Québécois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet said Tuesday he doesn’t consider the New Democratic Party's request for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to waive cabinet confidentiality “to be serious” after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh reiterated the request during a press conference earlier Tuesday.

Singh has called on the prime minister to waive cabinet confidentiality given the "seriousness" of the allegations concerning the Trudeau government’s now-cancelled contract with WE Charity, and to release all documents related to the deal.

Singh added that the NDP’s concern is that the controversy is not “limited to the prime minister.”

But Blanchet argued on Tuesday that waiving cabinet confidentiality is “no small decision.”

“It is easy to ask when you know that you’ll never be sitting in cabinet,” he said, adding that doing so would create a precedent “that could be complex” and impact future governments.
