Twelve days later, Senator Edward J. Markey, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Group of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led a delegation to Taipei, which again seriously undermined the three joint communiques between China and the U.S.
Andy Boreham, a New Zealand columnist who lives in China, explains the three communiques and condemns American politicians for repeatedly ignoring the one-China principle, which has long been recognized by both countries.
"People of China, and especially those in Taiwan, now enter a new, uncertain period where anxiety remains high, and the future is unclear. A decades-long agreement between China and the U.S. has been seriously eroded and gravely challenged. Will the world's two largest economies patch things up and get back on track? Only time will tell," Andy says.
