Protests over Belarus presidential election, crackdowns continue to swell

CA, 15 Aug 2020
Mass demonstrations continued on Friday over the presidential election of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus, with thousands of people taking to the streets across the country.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets for a sixth consecutive day demanding that Lukashenko step down, along with an equally strong police response which saw police use tear gas, shock grenades and rubber bullets against demonstrators.

Many have raised questions as to the legitimacy of the country's election after Lukashenko received more than 80 per cent of the vote.

Workers from state-run industrial plants, employees of Minsk Tractor Works, teachers and health workers all took to the streets, adding their voices to the tens of thousands already calling for Lukashenko to step down.
