Beirut explosion: Lebanon’s information minister resigns amid growing anger over deadly blast

CA, 09 Aug 2020
Lebanese Information Minister, Manal Abdel Sammad announced her resignation from the government on Sunday following last week's explosion in Beirut, which killed nearly 160 people and injured more than 6,000.

The minister said she was responding to calls for change following mass protests that erupted after the explosion.

About 10,000 people gathered on Saturday, Aug. 8 in Martyrs' Square, where they tried to break down a barrier along a road leading to parliament. Others threw stones at riot police, who fired tear gas to disperse them.

Protesters said their politicians should resign and be punished for negligence they say led to Tuesday's blast, the biggest ever to hit Beirut.

The Red Cross said it had treated 117 people for injuries on the scene Saturday, while another 55 were taken to hospital. One police officer was killed.
