Rayshard Brooks funeral: Family, mourners pay final respects during service at MLK church

CA, 24 Jun 2020
Family members and mourners gathered Tuesday in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Atlanta church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. used to preach, for the funeral of Rayshard Brooks, 27, who died after a police shot him in the back in a Wendy's parking lot.

Senior Pastor Rev. Raphael Warnock said during a speech at the funeral, "if your skin is the weapon and your complexion is the crime, what do you do to stay alive? Comply like George Floyd? Or run like Rayshard Brooks? I'm not asking for a friend, I'm asking for myself and my nieces and my nephews and my children."

Brooks' mother-in-law, Rochelle Gooden remembered him as a loving man who took care of his family and told stories of them having barbecue challenges.

She said he always called her “mom” instead of “mother-in-law.”

Brooks' niece Gabrielle Martinez cried as she delivered a message, calling for people to love each other.

Jymaco Brooks, Rayshard’s cousin, thanked people for standing with his family, and ensured Rayshard’s widow, Tomika Miller, that he will be there for her to provide support whenever she needs.

Brooks' June 12 death further heightened tensions over police brutality and racism in American policing that had been burning since the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis in late May.
