Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to Toronto Mayor John Tory’s announcement on Thursday that he would table a motion on police reform, with Ford stating that he believes it would be a “massive, massive error” to defund the police.

Tory’s motion calls for the city manager to “develop alternative models of community safety response,” including the creation of non-police response calls that don’t involve violence or weapons.

Ford said he would prefer to increase the police budget and support officers “when it comes to community outreach” and other areas including mental health issues. The premier said that instead of defunding the police, officers should receive better training.

The premier also said he would be open to reviewing the Police Act and Equipment and Use of Force regulations.
