CA, 25 Jun 2020
Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam, along with Health Minister Patty Hajdu and other officials, delivered an update on the federal government's response to COVID-19 on Thursday.
Tam said on Thursday that 64 per cent of people in Canada have recovered from the illness.
As of 1:07 p.m. ET, Canada has reported a total of 102,415 COVID-19 cases, with a total of 8,494 deaths.
During the press conference, Hajdu announced that the federal government, through the Canadian Institute of Health Research and the International Research Development Centre and provincial health research funding agencies in several provinces, will be providing $109 million to fund 139 new and ongoing scientific research projects.
Also, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion Carla Qualtrough announced that the federal government would be "further bolstering investment" in the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy by $34 million, which will help create new job placements and internships for Canadian youth.
Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth Bardish Chagger announced a grant for post-secondary students and recent graduates across the country, providing between $1,000 and $5,000, who participate in "eligible volunteer service opportunities" from June 25 to Oct. 31. The greater the number of hours volunteered, the greater the grant amount given will be, she said.
