Trump holds news conference as U.S. set to ban TikTok, WeChat | LIVE

CA, 19 Sep 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump is giving a news conference on Friday just hours after the Commerce Department announced the country would ban downloads of TikTok and WeChat starting Sunday.

The announcement by Commerce Department Wilbur Ross included that there would be a total ban on WeChat, citing national security and data privacy. A total ban on the use of TikTok will follow on Nov. 12, but Ross said in an interview access to the app may be possible if certain safeguards are put in place.

Friday's announcement also raises questions about California tech giant Oracle's recent deal to take over U.S. operations of TikTok, a requirement by Trump for the app to continue operating in the country.

The president's news conference also comes the same day the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deal to keep the borders with Canada and Mexico closed would continue through Oct. 21 as part of measures to contain the coronavirus.

The U.S. has recorded more than 6.6 million COVID-19 cases and nearly 200,000 deaths as it continues to deal with the ongoing pandemic.
