Rescuers attempting to free hundreds of whales stranded on Australian sandbar

CA, 22 Sep 2020
Rescue operations began on Tuesday morning to save hundreds of beached pilot whales stranded on a wide sandbar at Macquarie Harbour off the remote coast of the Australian island of Tasmania since Monday, however rescuers warned the operation could take days to complete.

Rescuers had set free at least 25 whales marooned on the sandbar by late Tuesday, with hopes to refloat hundreds more within days and end one of the country's worst beaching events.

Around 270 pilot whales have been stranded at Macquarie Harbour since Monday. Government scientists said it appeared that at least 25 of the animals, believed to be pilot whales, had already died.
