Charles Mauldin recalls ‘Bloody Sunday’ attack on John Lewis at Selma memorial

CA, 26 Jul 2020
Charles Mauldin was a teenager when Martin Luther King Jr. led a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in 1965 that ended with state troopers attacking civil rights demonstrators. He recalled the ordeal at a memorial for civil rights icon John Lewis on Saturday.

Lewis suffered a skull fracture that day and was one of fifty-eight people who were treated for injuries.

Mauldin said he was “close enough” to Lewis, who had led the march alongside MLK, “to hear that crack.”

“I’ll never forget it,” he said.

Lewis died on July 17 after a battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.
