Beirut explosion: Trump backtracks on earlier claim that explosion was an ‘attack’
CA, 06 Aug 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump backtracked Wednesday on comments he made the day earlier, calling the deadly explosion in the Lebanese capital, an “attack.”
He stated experts don’t know what it was but that “someone left some terrible explosive devices and things around, perhaps.”
He said the U.S. is “looking into” what caused the explosion but then added, “how can you say accident?”
The impact of the explosion in Beirut’s port was felt as far away as Cyprus, which is about 240 kilometres from the blast location. As of the afternoon of Aug. 5, the death toll stood at just above 100, and officials estimate at least 4,000 more were wounded.
Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud, has said the damage from the explosion could be upwards of $5 billion.
