Strong Franco-German alliance key to securing coronavirus recovery deal

The coronavirus pandemic and Europe’s response has bolstered the alliance between its two biggest economies, France and Germany. With the coronavirus pandemic threatening to plunge Europe into its worst recession since World War II, the German chancellor Angela Merkel joined French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in proposing a recovery fund for the bloc, for the first time funded by joint borrowing.
