Mourners filled the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of Rayshard Brooks. Hundreds filed past his gold-coloured casket at a public viewing at the church, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached until his assassination in 1968.

Brooks, 27, died after a police confrontation in an Atlanta Wendy's parking lot escalated to gunfire. An autopsy conducted shows Brooks was shot twice in the back. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide.

The death of Brooks — another in a long line of Black Americans killed by police — further heightened racial concerns in the United States at a time of national reawakening over racism and police brutality.
