Trudeau addresses calls to intervene in Meng Wanzhou case, announces investments for students | FULL
CA, 25 Jun 2020
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held his regular COVID-19 briefing outside of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa on Thursday morning.
Trudeau announced further economic investments for students would be coming from his government to help mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19.
As well, Trudeau said he is emphatically rejecting calls to drop extradition proceedings against a Chinese tech executive in the hope China would free Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
China has explicitly tied the fate of two detained Canadians to the release of Meng Wanzhou, joining the growing calls for Ottawa to intervene in the Huawei executive’s extradition.
The Canadian Prime Minister says bowing to pressure from Beijing would put many more citizens at risk by signalling Canada can be intimidated.
