CA, 09 Jun 2020
Quebec Premier François Legault and provincial health officials delivered an update on Tuesday about the province's new COVID-19 cases and the government's ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Legault announced that the province now has over 5,000 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19, as the province continues to slowly loosen lockdown restrictions. The premier acknowledged that when the pandemic began, "we did not act quickly enough," as Quebec marks this grim milestone.
The province recorded an additional 45 fatalities on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 5,029. Quebec has 53,185 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, after 138 new infections were reported from the previous day. However, the number of hospitalizations has declined to 961 and patients in intensive care dropped to 117.
In addition, Legault also said that he will be consulting "with certain people" in the next few days before commenting on plans to tackle racism in the province. The premier added that he wants to see racism disappear in all of Quebec "in all domains" including in the police force.
