Over 5000 migrants move to new Lesbos camp after Moria fire; 135 test positive for COVID-19

CA, 18 Sep 2020
More than 5000 migrants stranded on the island of Lesbos have moved into a new temporary tent camp, said Greece's migration minister Notis Mitarachi, on Thursday, with 135 testing positive for COVID-19.

The migrants had been living on the streets for more than a week after a blaze gutted the overcrowded Moria camp and left over 12,000 people, most of them refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and various African countries, without shelter, proper sanitation or access to food and water.

A police operation took place early Thursday to help move migrants into the new camp, called Mavrovouni, and included 70 female officers and officials from the National Public Health Association, who were testing migrants for COVID-19.

Migrants who test positive for COVID-19 are taken to a special quarantine location in the camp and given medical care, said Mitarachi.

Many migrants had been reluctant to enter Mavrovouni camp as they had hoped to leave the island after Moria burned down. But on Thursday, the supermarket parking lot where many had set up makeshift shelters was mostly empty.
