Signal blackouts and billions wasted - how Huawei announcement could hit consumers
Telegraph, 14 Jul 2020
The Government’s decision to ban Huawei from its next-generation telecoms network and stripping out all its existing infrastructure could mean signal blackouts and additional costs for consumers.
Just six months ago, the Government set a 35pc cap on the amount of Huawei 5G and fibre equipment that operators could use in their networks, and said its kit could not be used in the "core" part of the next-generation network.
However, new US sanctions on Huawei have meant the Government has revisited that decision, and today took a firmer stance.
It comes despite growing warnings from operators, with BT this week saying it would be "impossible" to remove all the kit within the next ten years and Vodafone saying it would cost “single-figure billions”.
