The Whiskey War: Canada, Denmark agree to end Arctic territorial dispute over Hans Island | LIVE

CA, 14 Jun 2022
Canada's foreign affairs minister Mélanie Joly alongside Denmark's foreign affairs minister Jeppe Kofod will sign a historic agreement ending a decades-long dispute over a tiny island in the Arctic on Tuesday.

Dan Vandal, minister of northern affairs, confirmed Monday that there will be an “official signing” of the accord over the 1.3-square-kilometre Hans Island on Tuesday.

The barren rock has been the subject of decades of diplomatic disputes between the two nations - known colloquially as "The Whiskey War" - as it sits in the territorial waters of both.

The agreement is expected to divide the uninhabited island between Ellesmere Island, in Nunavut, and Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

The deal is likely to mean that Canada, for the first time, shares a land border with Denmark.
